Hey Flute Students & Parents
Are you ready to take your playing to the next level?
Do you want to learn how to manage nerves during auditions?
Are you ready to have amazing performance opportunities?
Want to be a part of an supportive family of flutists and create life long friendships?
What about just wanting to have fun learning about music?
If you answered yes to any of these questions then you belong here!
Whether your goal is to learn how to play the flute, gain entry into a collegiate music program, audition for festivals, competitions, and youth orchestras or you just want to be the best flutist you can be,
I can help.
In my 20 plus years as a teacher I've taught flutists ranging in age from 5-65. I've worked with students from every background imaginable, and I have extensive training and expertise teaching music to students with a variety of disabilities and special needs.
I am mindful that each student is a unique learner, and I work tirelessly to ensure that every lesson is focused on that student's individual goals.
By taking lessons you will:
-
Learn proper tone production, breath control and fingering on the flute. Band class is a great start, but individual instruction helps keep bad habits from starting and also caters the learning speed to the student. (Band class moving too slowly for you? We can pick up the pace. Band class moving too fast? I’ll help you get caught up!)
-
Learn and perform all types of music. Bach and Mozart are amazing, but there is a world of music out there from Latin to Jazz, from Modern to Pop. We play it all!
-
Improve audition and performance skills (shaky or sweaty hands? Running out of breath? I’ve got solutions!)
-
Develop an understanding of music theory, music history and performance practices of all time periods.
(Yeah, you’re gonna get to improvise!)
-
Perform in studio recitals, solo recitals, chamber ensembles, holiday caroling and Flute Choir
(with bass and alto flutes. You’ve seen them, I’ve got them!)
-
Learn body awareness techniques that will allow you to play in a manner that is both pain and tension free.
-
Become a self-disciplined, motivated, independent learner, who for the rest of their lives can confidently apply the lessons musicianship has taught them.
And we do it all while having fun!
All that sounds great! But how do lessons work??
-
Lessons are 30, 45, or 60 minutes based on your existing experience, stamina, or desire.
(We'll decide which lesson length is right for you in your first free 30 minute lesson!)

-
First, I want to hear how your week has been – what amazing things happened to you? What was maybe not-so-amazing that I can help you with?

-
Next we’ll get into how the week has been for your practicing. Did you reach your goals? What worked? What didn’t? How can we make the good parts into a habit for you? (The answer to this last question is critical to long term success)

-
Lessons aren’t a lecture, they’re a conversation! Once we begin, we’ll spend a lot of time discussing what you hear and feel while you’re playing, and what you liked or didn't like about your progress. Then we talk about what to keep and what to change, how to apply the new skills you've acquired , and how to be your own effective teacher at home.

-
At the end of each session you’ll get notes from our lesson discussions, ideas and techniques for practicing, additional audio/video tutorials (if needed) and your assignment for the week.
Come to your lessons well-prepared with curiosity and an open mind and you’ll be amazed at how quickly you improve!
Welcome to your weekly lesson!
Why should I take lessons with Kim?
-
As soon as you enter my studio you become a valued member of my flute family. You will be provided with unending support, not just during our weekly lessons, but in the form of frequent text check-ins, audio tutorials and guidance in all areas of music making. Your time is precious, so I’ll always make your music education my top priority.

I am a firm believer that the student, their family, and I are a team.
As a result I am dedicated to making sure that students know what is expected of them, that parents understand the importance of their child's lessons, and that we are all dedicated to making this relationship incredibly successful.
-
I am not only a professional flutist, I'm a professional teacher. I am constantly striving to continue my education and share everything I've discovered along the way with my amazing flutists and their families. I never stop learning, whether it is from my colleagues or my students. We grow together
Teaching Philosophy
I believe that every person deserves an opportunity to excel at what they love without limitations. Achievement should never be limited to merely what is "average". I teach music this way because I had the support of teachers and mentors who believed that nothing was out of reach as long as I was willing to put in the work to get where I wanted to be.

Studying music does so much more than create better musicians. Music is a universal language that allows us to communicate across social and cultural boundaries and connects us to one another. Music education bonds us over shared human experiences, and as a result we become better individuals, better community members, and better citizens. My greatest goal is to develop a lifelong love of music and humanity in every student I teach.

It is extremely important to me to meet students where they are growth-wise, but without boundaries one can accomplish big things in very little time. Whether the student is taking lessons for personal growth, to have fun, or to become a competitive musician, we will set clear goals, and work at a pace that is optimal for each individual learner.

Students perform in various annual recitals and concerts: Driveway Duets, Solo and Ensemble Recitals, Holiday Flute Caroling, Chamber Concerts and my most popular group, The Flute Choir of Boca Raton. Participation in these groups fosters a sense of family, but we also take having fun very seriously.( Trampolines and Nerf guns are part of our choir party fare)
I expect students to show up weekly with curiosity, a positive attitude, and a readiness for learning. Daily practice is preferred for optimal achievement during each lesson. I have also found that by holding students to high expectations from the beginning, they will excel much faster and flute lessons become even more rewarding. Standards are high, but we laugh....A LOT
